3 Shadow Journal Prompts to Explore Your Joy

Updated: Mar 17

Joy is often seen as the ultimate goal—something we chase, cherish, and strive to hold onto.

But have you ever stopped to ask yourself how you relate to joy?

Do you allow yourself to experience it fully, or do hidden fears, doubts, or old conditioning get in the way?

Shadow Work isn’t just about healing pain; it’s also about expanding our capacity for happiness.

These three journal prompts will help you explore the hidden layers of joy, uncover any subconscious blocks, and invite more authentic happiness into your life.

“When was the last time I felt truly joyful, and what did I believe about myself in that moment?”

Why This is a Profound Question:

Joy isn’t just about external experiences—it’s deeply tied to our self-perception.

This prompt helps uncover the hidden beliefs we associate with joy, including whether we feel worthy of it or if we subconsciously attach conditions to our happiness.

What to Notice as You Write:

  • Do you allow yourself to experience joy fully, or do you downplay it?

  • Were there any thoughts of guilt, fear, or self-doubt creeping in alongside your joy?

  • Did this joyful moment feel like an exception, or do you believe you deserve joy regularly?

  • Notice any patterns—do you only feel joy in certain environments or around specific people?

“What aspects of joy in others make me feel envious, uncomfortable, or dismissive?”

Why This is a Profound Question:

Our reactions to other people’s joy can reveal a lot about our own hidden wounds.

If someone’s happiness triggers discomfort, resentment, or skepticism, it may indicate an unconscious belief that joy is limited, undeserved, or even unsafe.

What to Notice as You Write:

  • Do you admire their joy but feel like it’s unattainable for you?

  • Do you find yourself judging or downplaying their happiness? (“They’re probably faking it” or “That’s not real joy.”)

  • Does their joy trigger feelings of comparison or inadequacy?

  • Reflect on any past experiences where joy was withheld, punished, or conditional in your life.

“As a child, how was joy treated in my family or environment?”

Why This is a Profound Question:

Our childhood experiences shape how we relate to joy as adults.

If joy was celebrated freely, we may feel safe expressing it. But if it was dismissed, ignored, or even punished, we might suppress our own happiness without realising it.

What to Notice as You Write:

  • Were expressions of joy encouraged or met with indifference?

  • Did you feel like you had to "earn" joy through achievement or good behaviour?

  • Were there unspoken family rules about when and how joy was acceptable?

  • How do these early experiences still affect the way you allow (or deny) yourself joy today?

If these prompts resonated with you, imagine the transformation that comes with a fully guided Shadow Work journey.
