Shadow vs Persona

Updated: Mar 14

ree

The concept of Shadow comes from Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Carl Gustav Jung. He determined that to be truly happy and fulfilled, we must stop being who we think we should be or who people expect us to be and make the effort to figure out who we truly are.

The Persona

The Persona is the part of us we show the world. It represents the parts of us we develop and sustain to function in society.

Our Persona is formed from the qualities we learned were “desirable” or which matched the expectations of parents, teachers and peers in childhood.

We can also think of the Persona as the different “masks” we put on for different social situations. For example, the mask you put on at the club may be different from the mask you put on as a student in class.

You may correlate “different masks” with inauthenticity, but I wouldn’t necessarily assign the Persona, by default, as our inauthentic self. I believe everything that we are is who we’re meant to be OR who we’re meant to manage/overcome. In other words, know thyself to master thyself.

By extension, I believe that just because our current self is a result of a bad experience or traumatic childhood it doesn’t necessarily make this version of us “fake” or inauthentic.

I believe if our soul needed to learn a specific lesson or personality trait it would’ve learned it through any experience, good or bad and this personality trait (or mask!) is authentic in its own way.

At the end of the day, the only person who can know for sure if something is authentic to who you are or not, is YOU. You get to decide! You get to choose who you want to be and who you’re meant to be.

The Shadow

The Shadow represents all the parts of us we learned to hide away and repress when developing our Persona. They contain the parts of us we learned were “undesirable” in the eyes of whoever and whatever we grew up around.

The Shadow is commonly misunderstood to represent only “negative” or “bad” qualities.  However, it actually represents all qualities we learned, as a child, to ignore, hide and/or repress and this can also include positive qualities.

For example, let’s say you grew up with manipulative caregivers, if your efforts to explain or defend yourself as a child were met with negative consequences like physical abuse or statements like “stop talking back”, you may have learned to just stay quiet because it was safer for you to do so. In this case, Self-advocacy (a positive trait) is part of your Shadow.

So, remember The Shadow represents all the hidden facets of ourselves and these hidden facets can contain both positive and negative qualities.

Why is Shadow Work Important?

Our Persona lives in the conscious and our Shadow lives in the subconscious.

Unfortunately, it is our subconscious mind which runs the show and shapes our reality. Focused Shadow Work brings awareness to our Shadow, effectively moving it from subconscious to conscious.

Taking an honest, non-judgemental look at and making peace with our Shadow means that our subconscious is no longer run by repression, guilt or shame. This means that our reality can stop being shaped by repression too.

Love and true acceptance of everything that we are brings us the clarity we need to realise our inherent worth as spiritual beings having a human experience. It helps put in perspective what we truly deserve and because we can now operate from a space of love (instead of shame), we can make decisions which serve our best, healthiest interests.

An unreconciled Shadow shapes an unhealed reality meaning we’re bound to experience the same wounds and challenges over and over again in different forms.

This is clearly a colossal waste of time which unnecessarily delays our journey to self.

This makes Shadow Work a powerfully transformative practice which invites us to confront and integrate these suppressed aspects.

By shining a light on our inner darkness and exploring the parts of ourselves we may deem undesirable, we embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing.

Conclusion

Understanding the dynamic between the Persona and the Shadow is essential for true self-awareness and personal growth.

While the Persona helps us navigate the external world, the Shadow holds the hidden aspects of ourselves that influence our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours in ways we may not realise.

Shadow Work is the bridge that connects these two forces, allowing us to embrace our whole selves with honesty and compassion. By integrating our Shadow rather than rejecting it, we step into a more authentic and empowered version of ourselves—one that is not bound by societal expectations but rooted in true self-acceptance.
